DearMr.Tedesco:

InresponsetotheAugust13,1981letterontheLongTermOperability ofDeepDraftPumpswhichdividedtherecommended actionsintoinstallation instructions andtestingprocedures, Pennsylvania PowerandLightCompanyhasreviewedtheconcernsraisedandhasreachedthefollowing conclusions.

Theoriginalinstallation ofthedeepdraftpumpsonsiteisdeemedadequate.

Theprocedures usedfortheinstallation areavailable onsiteforIEInspector review.Theseprocedures ensuredinstallation waswithinthemanufacturers.

tolerances.

Further, thesepumpshaveoperatedwithoutincident, asdescribed laterinthisletter.Pumpremovalandreinstallation forthesolepurposeofverifying properinstallation isunnecessary.

Deepdraftpumpassemblyanddisassembly maintenance procedures willberevisedtoincludestepssimilar'totherecommended guidelines statedinthesubjectletter. However, opticalalignment toassuremaximumstraightness andconcentricity oftheassemblyisunnecessary.

Dialindication alignment checkswillbeperformed.

Additionally, thepump-tomotor flangeparallelism andshaftperpendicularity checkswillbeincluded.

Construction ofthesumpsforthedeepdraftpumpshasalsobeencompleted.

Pumptestinghasbeenperformed toverifytheabsenceoffluidanomalies, suchasvortexing'r turbulance, inthesuppression poolnear, theResidualHeatRemovalPumpintakesandtheCoreSprayPumpintakes.,Thethreephasetestingprogramproposedtoensurepumpoperability andtodetermine bearingweartrendsisconsidered unadvisable atthistime.Thispostureisbasedonthepumpshavingpreviously experienced aconsiderable
