Subject:

Braidwood Station Units 1 and 2 Fusible Links in Curtain Type Fire Dampers NRC-Docket Nos. 50-456-and 50-457 Reference (a): August 3, 1982 letter from T. R. Tramm to J. G. Keppler.

Dear Mr. Keppler:

On June 24, 1982, Commonwealth Edison notified Mr. L.

McGregor of your office of a potential deficiency reportable pursuant to 10 CFR 50.55(e) regarding curtain type fire dampers at Braidwood Station. A similar deficiency was reported at Byron Station on July 1, 1982. The written report on that deficiency was submitted in reference (a). Mention of the Braidwood deficiency was inadvertently omitted from that report but the deficiency is identical. This report is sohmitted to fulfill the requirements for a written report on the Bra.uwood deficiency. For your tracking purposes this deficiency is numbered 82-02A.

Description of-Deficiency The sheet metal contractor, Pullman Sheet Metal Works, Inc. , has been informed by one of their suppliers, American Warming and Ventilating Inc., that certain curtain fire dampers supplied for Braidwood may not close when the fusible link separates. These dampers were shipped from American Warming and Ventilating between July 6, 1979 and March 24, 1981. They have type "C" fusible links which have been formed into a channel cross section with the legs of the channel being about 900 to the main body of the fusible link.

When the link separates, the blade stack does not always fall into place.

Analysis of Safety Implications These dampers are installed to prevent the spread of fire through the ventilating ducts. The deficiency reduces the effective-ness of the fire barriers.

J. G. Keppler February 3, 1983 Corrective Action-Taken All curtain type fire dampers with "C" type fusible links will be reworked prior to fuel load. The links will be replaced and the support straps reworked in accordance with the instructions supplied by the manufacturer, American Warning and Ventilating.

Please address any questions regarding this matter to this office.

Very truly yours,
