Dear Mr. Davis:

On February 17, 1987, the Commonwealth Edison Company notified your office of a potential deficiency reportable pursuant to 10 CFR 50.55(e) regarding the-subject failure at our Braidwood Station.

Reference (a) provided information concerning this matter to fulff.11 the thirty day reporting requirement.

For tracking purposuA. this deficiency was assigned Number 457/87-01.

The purpoce of this latter is to provide an interim report regarding an additional rocker arm failure.

Interim Report On March 29, 1987 after approximately 24 hours2.777778e-4 days <br />0.00667 hours <br />3.968254e-5 weeks <br />9.132e-6 months <br /> of a scheduled 100 hour0.00116 days <br />0.0278 hours <br />1.653439e-4 weeks <br />3.805e-5 months <br /> run, the Braidwood 2B (2DGolKB) Diesel Generator experienced a rocker arm failure.

The failure mode is not readily identifiable, therefore a joint investigation is currently being conducted by Commonwealth Edison Company and Cooper-Bessemer.

The investigation encompasses both metallurgical analysis and mechanical interactions to further define the failure modes experienced.

This event is being included under the scope of 10CFR50.55(e) 457/87-01 and is considered an interim report.

An updated report is expected to be submitted by May 1, 1987.
