Braidwood Station Units 1 and 2 10 CFR 50.55(e) No. 84-12 Revised Final Report q Removal of Nameplates from ASME Large Bore Spool Pieces I

NRC Docket Nos. 50-456 and 50-457

dated January 17, 1985 (d) A.D. Miosi letter to J.G. Keppler dated June 10, 1985

Dear Mr. Keppler:

References (a) through (d) provided information concerning a deficiency reportable pursuant to 10 CFR 50.55(e) regarding the removal of nameplates from ASME large bore spool pieces at our Braidwood Station and correcti've actions being taken to resolve this issue. The purpose of this letter is to revise our final. report, Reference (d).

As previously reported, Commonwealth Edison Company NCR No.

639 and Phillips, Getschow Company NCR No. 1783 were generated to document this item and track its resolution. These nonconformance reports have been closed. The installed large bore piping spools that do not have ASME NPT nameplates have been identified as part of the Material Traceability Verification (MTV) Program, paSqnuMM$P S AUM 31986

/O C 6d) 7

I Phillips Getschow Company has researched and verified those spool pieces without ASME NPT nameplates in accordance with their procedure PGCP-51. The scope of this program included 532 spool pieces and 25 piping penetration assemblies. With the exception of replacement plates, the following actions have been completed:

(

l. Determine the total population of installed spool pieces that do not have nameplates attached.
2. Verify the identity of installed spool pieces using manufacturer's documentation.
3. Field check installed apool pieces without nameplates to locate nameplate removal areas.
4. Perform NDE required by ASME Section III on nameplate removal areas.
5. Measure pipe wall thickness at nameplate removal areas to insure that minimum wall thickness is j maintained. j i
6. Any required repair to the nameplate removal area will be performed per established procedures.
7. With the concurrence of Commonwealth Edison Co. and the Authorized Nuclear Inspector, replacement identification plates will be attached to the installed spool pieces.
8. Resolve on a case by case basis, those spool pieces for which a nameplate or nameplate removal area cannot be located.

Upon review of this program and with the concurrence of the Commonwealth Edison Company Authorized Nuclear Inspector, it was decided not to attach replacement identification plates to the installed spool pieces. This decision was based on the fact that Phillips, Getschow Company installation documentation provides adequate traceability for installed items. Appropriate Commonwealth Edison Company procedures and Phillips, Getschow Company procedures were revised to reflect this change.

A list has been developed by Phillips, Getschow Company of

! isometric drawings outside the scope of MTV. Spool pieces not

! within the scope of MTV that were not subject to installation j procedures to properly control removal of NPT nameplates have had a i separate visual exam to verify nameplate attachment.
