SUBJECT:

CATAWBA NUCLEAR STATION STANDBY SERVICE WATER POND

Dear Mr. Marshall:

Pursuant to our discussions with Mr. Jason J. Chen, P.E., of your office, we are enclosing written confirmation from Duke Power Co., of the removal of a structure near the left  !

downstream toe of the dam at the referenced site. It is our understanding that the enclosure will satisfactorily address the hazard potential, and that the dam will be considered to have

" Low" hazard potential. Your final report should confirm the " Low" hazard potential, l

if you are in agreement with the proposed classification of the structure, it is requested that i your final report for the Catawba Nuclear Station Standby Service Water Pond dam be issued at this time. As stated in our letter dated July 8,1997, we concur with the five recommendations for improving maintenance and operation of the dam and related structures j identified in your draft report.  ;

i' If you have any questions regarding these or related matters, or if additional information is required, please call Mr. Daniel Rom at (301) 415-6704.

Sincerely, (original signed by)

Joseph J. Holonich, Chief Uranium Recovery Branch Division of Waste Management Office of Nuclear Material Safety and Safeguards
