Update Reportable Defect - 10 CFR Part 21 Forged Steel Fittings Shoreham Nuclear Power Station - Unit 1 Docket No. 50-322

Dear Mr. Russell:

As a result of our initial findings reported in the referenced letter, fittings which were supplied to shoreham that were manufactured by Standard Fittings Company and inspected by X-Ray Inspection, Inc., are being investigated. The purpose of this letter is to inform you of our current status.

This investigation initially involved a determination as to the number of fittings supplied and then an actual inspection of fittings installed in Class 1 systems. Inspection acceptance criteria were established through an engineering analysis. LILCO reviewed its procurement records and determined that there were 7779 fittings supplied to Shoreham from Standard Fittings Company and inspected by X-Ray Inspections, Inc.

Of the 7779 fittings identified, 5829 fittings are in the ware-house and have been placed on hold. Of the remaining 1950 fittings, it has been determined that 771 are installed in safety related systems of which 124 are in Class 1 systems. An inspection program to examine these fittings has been initiated.

Page 2 Of the 124 fittings' installed in Class 1 systems, 5 are presently inaccessible for inspection. It is our intent to remove the reactor head insulating frame in January 1988 and inspect these 5 fittings. The remaining 119 have been inspected. The results of this inspection indicated that 22 fittings contained questionable surface indications. All of these surface indications were removed by blending and all 22 fittings were accepted for use, based on a determination that minimum wall requirements were satisfied.

The inspection of the 647 fittrngs installed in Class 2 and 3 systems is presently ongoing. A sample of 207 of these fittings will be inspected.

As indicated above, this investigation is still ongoing. The NRC Resident Inspector will be informed of our findings and of any remedial action that will be taken for fittings which require rework. The results of this inspection program and analysis will be documented and available for the Resident Inspector's review.
