Subject:

Interim Report of 10CFR50.55(e)

Item on Battery Cables (#61)

Dear Mr. Keppler:

This interim report involving battery cables has been prepared to pro-vide the current status of this problem.

This item was originally reported to Mr. J. Neisler of NRC Region III by Detroit Edison's Mr. J. D. Ryan, Quality Assurance Engineer -

Project Quality Assurance on March 12, 1983.

During the course of a review of the D.C. system for battery load curve data, it was discovered that some cables were inadequately sized. The circuits were primarily associated with motor operated valves and switch gear, where long lengths of cable were used.

Approximately thirty-five (35) circuits were affected.

All Design Change Notices (DCNs) necessary to make the cable changes have been issued to the field, and work is in progress.

Another report on this item, either interim or final, will be sent when further information is available. If you have questions concern-ing this matter, please contact Mr. G. M. Trahey, Assistant Director -

Project Quality Assurance.

Very truly yours, V
