l. LER NUMBER: LER/R0 80-26/03L-0
11. LICENSEE NAME: Commonwealth Edison Company Quad-Cities Nuclear Power Station 111. FACILITY NAME: Unit One IV. DOCKET NUMBER: 050-254 V. EVENT DESCRIPTION:

On October 11, 1980, Unit One was in the REFUEL Mode and Unit Two was operating at 815 MWe and 2489 MWt. At 4:12 a.m. the 1/2 Diesel Gen-erator tripped from high engine temperature af ter running for one hour and fifty minutes. The 1/2 Diesel Generator Cooling Water Pump was found tripped. In acco.-dance with Technical Speci fication 3.9.E. ,

the Unit One and Unit Two Diesel Generators were tested immediately and all of the low pressure core cooling and both loops of the containment cooling mode of the RHR system associated with the Unit Two Diesel Gen-erator were demonstrated to be operable. The 1/2 Diesel Generator Cooling Water Pump motor was replaced. The 1/2 Diesel Generator was tested successfully and returned to service on October 12, 1980.

VI. PROBABLE CONSEQUENCES OF THE OCCURRENCE:

The 1/2 Diesel Generator provides a standby power supply to Bus 23-1 which feeds Core Spray Pump 2A and RHR Pumps 2A and 28. The Unit Two Diesel Generator was demonstrated to be operable as were the redundant 2B Core Spray Pump and 2C and 2D RHR Pumps. The requirements of Technical Specification 3.9.E. were satisfied, therefore, the con-sequences of the occurrence were minimal.

Vll. CAUSE:

The motor cn the 1/2 Diesel Generator Cooling Water Pump was found to have a short which caused the pump to trip. This led to high engine temperature in the Diesei Generator. The motor is manufactured by General Electric, Model No. SK365AK169 Vlli. CORRECTIVE ACTl0J1:

On October 12, 1980, the 1/2 Diesel Generator Cooling Water Pump motor was replaced temporarily with a like used motor that was shop tested prior to installation. The failed motor is to be rebuilt and re-installed.
