Indian Point Energy Center Status Report August 2, 2006 Operational Status Indian Point Unit 2 is operating at 100% power and has been on line 76 days. Indian Point Unit 3 is also at 100% reactor power and has been on line 12 days, New York Sets Another Record for Electricity Demand The current heat wave resulted in record demand for electricity across New York on Tuesday, breaking a record set just two weeks ago, according to the New York Independent System Operator. Between 4 and 5 p.m. on Tuesday, the NYISO recorded an hourly average peak load of 33,879 megawatts (MW), surpassing a record 32,624 MW set on July 17. The ISO is predicting that today's demand may be even higher approaching 34,000 MW.

To avert a possible power reserve shortage in New York City and Long Island, the NYISO called on companies in its Special Case Resources (SCR) and Emergency Demand Response Program (EDRP) to curtail power usage from 2 to 7 p.m. today. The curtailment programs were expected to reduce usage by 655 MW. Despite this precautionary step, New York's bulk electric grid had ample supplies of electricity for New Yorkers, the NYISO reported.

Indian Point Sirens Unavailable for Six Hours The sirens around the Indian Point nuclear power stations were unavailable early Wednesday morning between about midnight and 6:00 a.m.

The alert notification siren system became unavailable when the data collection feature in the systems computer malfunctioned. The computer problem affected the 156 sirens used to notify residents in the 10-mile emergency planning zone in an emergency.

The system malfunction was corrected at about 6:30 a.m. and the sirens are now operational. A siren system computer continuously monitors the status of the siren system and automatically notifies emergency planning personnel. Entergy is currently replacing the old sirens with a new state-of-the-art system.
