DENVER FEDERAL CENTER L)ENVER, COLORADO 80225-0046 n an n ain a n, May 15,1998 U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission ATTN: Document Control Desk Washington DC 20555 Re: License R-113, Docket 50-274 Sirs:
We are herein reporting our failure to perform environmental monitoring within the time limits stated in our Reactor Operations Manual. The USGS Reactor Operations Manual, paragraph 8.4.6, Environmental Monitoring, states, " Biennially, not to exceed 30 months, soil and water samples are taken from locations around the facility and analyzed for contamination."
Contrary to this requirement, the required soil and water samples were taken on 8/5/94 and then not taken again until 3/18/97. This is a period of more than 31 months between sample collection. The failure to sample within the specified 30 month period was an l
oversight of the reactor staff. Historically, the samples have normally been collected during the months of July through September in every even numbered year.
)
The required soil and water samples will be collected again this coming summer,1998, to restore the proper sampling cycle. The samples collected on 3/18/97 showed normal environmental isotopic compositions. We believe there is no further corrective action
)
necessary.
