ENCLOSURE REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION U.S. GEOLOGICAL SURVEY TRIGA RESEARCH REACTOR LICENSE AMENDMENT REQUEST DOCKET NO. 50-274

1. You used the computer code CAP 88-PC to calculate doses from the f ailure of a fuel element in air in the reactor room to a person at the Denver Federal Center Fence and -

the nearest residence, Part of the documentation for the code states that the modelis intended only for evaluating low-level, chronic releases; it is not appropriate for short-term accidental releases, in light of this warning please justify your use of this code including any modification of approach in the use of the code.

2. In your submission of July 16,1997, tables 2,3,8 and 9 present " effective dose" results from your CAP 88 PC calculations. Are these numbers total effective dose equivalent (TEDE) numbers? Do these numbers account for iodine doses to the thyroid? What is the dose to the thyroid?
