' Q s G EOLOGICAl. SURVEY llO X 25016 M.S. 424 DENVER FEDERAL CENTER DENVER, COLORADO 80225 is u m > n m n in Docket 50-274 P.pril 27, 1989 Document Control Desk U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D.C. 20555 Sirs:

Enclosed is a copy of a proposed revision to the Reactor Operator Requalification Program for the U.S. Geological Survey TRIGA Reactor Facility. The proposed revisions are believed to be necessary to make the program consistent with the current requirements of 10 CFR 55 and the operational requirements of the facility.

The changes to the plan are marked in the margins of the pages changed. The changes consist of the addition of annual operating examinations, allowing pulse or square wave operations instead of requiring pulse operations, and requiring participation in one annual emergency drill instead of both drills during a two year period.

These proposed changes have been reviewed and approved by our safety committee. We feel that they improve the requalification program and herein submit them for your review and approval. I can be reached at FTS 776-4726 if you need further information.

Sincerely, 2n D Tim DeBey Reactor Supervisor 1
