At approximately 0045 MST on May 6, 1987, Palo Verde Unit 2 was in Mode 1 (POWER OPERATION) when RU-148 was declared inoperable in order to perform surveillance test 36ST-9SQ08 (Radiation Monitoring Calibration Test For New Scope Area Monitors).
Attached please, find a Special Report 2-SR-87-015 prepared and submitted pursuant to Technical Specifications 3.3.3.1 and 6.9.2 This report discusses a Radiation Monitor inoperable for greater than 72 hours.
During the performance of 36ST-9SQ08 the monitor stopped operating.

Troubleshooting and repair in accordance with an approved work control document found that the communication portion of the Single Channel Area Monitor (SCAM)board was not communicating with the Remote Indicator Controller (RIC).The SCAM board was replaced and the monitor was calibrated and functionally tested in accordance with 36ST-9SQ08.
