Feedwater pipingwasspecified asseamlessASTMA106-64GradeCwithsupplementary testsS2,S3,andS4tobeperformed on'bothendsofonelengthfromeachheat..Preservice/Inservice Insectionand0eratinHistor2.(a)Apreservice inspection inaccordance withASMEBEPVCode,SectionXIwasnotperformed.

Hydrostatic testingandradiographic examination ofthefeedwat,er pipingweldsasindicated initemB-3abovewasperformed.

TheBsteamgenerator feedwater nozzletopipeelbowweldwasexaminedin1976usingthemagneticparticletechnique andfoundacceptable.

(b)The14inchreducertopipeweldneartheBsteamgenerator nozzlewasradiographically examinedin1973andultra-sonically examinedin1976following waterhammerandvibrat,ion problemsdiscussed below.Theweldswerefoundtobeacceptable.

3.(a)Thefeedwater nozzletoelbow,elbowtoreducer,andreducertopipeweldsateachsteamgenerator andthetwofeedwater pipetocontainment penetration weldswillberadiographically examinedduringthe1980refueling outage.Theremainder ofthefeedwater pipinginsidecontainment willbeexaminedoverthelifeoftheplant.asrequiredbyASMEBGPVCodeSectionXI.

Allweldsinthisprogramhavebeenpreviously inspected atleastonce.Alldesignbasisbreaklocations willbeexaminedoncemoreduringthe10yearinspection interval.

Two(2)transients whichcouldbecharacterized as"waterhammer"haveoccurredinthefeedwater systematGinnaStation.Thefirsttransient occurredonJuly22,1973andwasreportedtotheU.S.AtomicEnergyCommission inaletterdatedAugust21,1973toMr.JohnF.O'eary,Director, Directorate ofLicensing.

ThesecondoccurredonJune17,1975andwasreportedtotheU.S.NuclearRegulatory Commission inaletterdatedJuly17,1975toMr.RobertT.Carlson,Chief,Facilities Construction andEngineering SupportBranch,RegionI.Flowinducedvibration ofthesteamandfeedwater pipingatGinnaStationwasexperienced duringthefirstfewyearsofplantoperation.

Anextensive programofvibra-tionmonitoring, fatigueanalysis, andmodification wasperformed toresolvethisproblem.Themodifications includedupgrading aswellasadditionofpipesupportsandrestraints.

Theresultsoftheanalysesshowedthattheadditional stressesduetoflowinducedvibrations couldsafelybeaccommodated bytheaffectedpipingsystems.Therehavebeentwotypesoffeedwater controlusedatGinnaStation.FromstartuptoJanuary1978hydrazine injection wasusedtocontrolpHandoxygen.In1978afullflowdeepbedpolishing systemwasputonlineandpHcontrolwaschangedtoNH4OHaddition.

Thecontrolparameters remainedessentially thesameforbothperiods:1.pH2.dissolved oxygen3.N2H48.8-9.20-5ppb5-20ppbFromstartupuntilNovember1974smallcondenser leaks(C0.25gpm)weretolerated untilrepairscouldbemadesincesodiumorchlorideconcentration increases weresmall((1ppb).FromNovember1974untilJanuary1978allvolatiletreatment wasusedandanydetectable leak(<200cc/min)wasrepairedwithin24hours.Since1978thepolishers havebeeninservicecontinuously.
