o)'!x,I41N'EP'S'I1l Thefeedwaterpipingweldsoutsidecontainmentarebeinginspectedinaccordancewiththe"InserviceInspectionPlanforHighEnergyPipingWeldsatRobertE.GinnaNuclearPowerStation".Allweldsinthisprogramhavebeenpreviouslyinspectedatleastonce.Alldesignbasisbreaklocationswillbeexaminedoncemoreduringthe10yearinspectioninterval.Two(2)transientswhichcouldbecharacterizedas"waterhammer"haveoccurredinthefeedwatersystematGinnaStation.ThefirsttransientoccurredonJuly22,1973andwasreportedtotheU.S.AtomicEnergyCommissioninaletterdatedAugust21,1973toMr.JohnF.O'eary,Director,DirectorateofLicensing.ThesecondoccurredonJune17,1975andwasreportedtotheU.S.NuclearRegulatoryCommissioninaletterdatedJuly17,1975toMr.RobertT.Carlson,Chief,FacilitiesConstructionandEngineeringSupportBranch,RegionI.FlowinducedvibrationofthesteamandfeedwaterpipingatGinnaStationwasexperiencedduringthefirstfewyearsofplantoperation.Anextensiveprogramofvibra-tionmonitoring,fatigueanalysis,andmodificationwasperformedtoresolvethisproblem.Themodificationsincludedupgradingaswellasadditionofpipesupportsandrestraints.Theresultsoftheanalysesshowedthattheadditionalstressesduetoflowinducedvibrationscouldsafelybeaccommodatedbytheaffectedpipingsystems.TherehavebeentwotypesoffeedwatercontrolusedatGinnaStation.FromstartuptoJanuary1978hydrazineinjectionwasusedtocontrolpHandoxygen.In1978afullflowdeepbedpolishingsystemwasputonlineandpHcontrolwaschangedtoNH4OHaddition.Thecontrolparametersremainedessentiallythesameforbothperiods:1.pH2.dissolvedoxygen3.N2H48.8-9.20-5ppb5-20ppbFromstartupuntilNovember1974smallcondenserleaks(C0.25gpm)weretolerateduntilrepairscouldbemadesincesodiumorchlorideconcentrationincreasesweresmall((1ppb).FromNovember1974untilJanuary1978allvolatiletreatmentwasusedandanydetectableleak(<200cc/min)wasrepairedwithin24hours.Since1978thepolishershavebeeninservicecontinuously.
