Dear Mr. Grier:

In accordance with Appendix A, Beaver Valley Technical Specifications, the following occurrence is reported. This matter was discussed with Beaver Valley i NRC Resident Inspector, Mr. D. A. Beckman, today at 0230 hours0.00266 days <br />0.0639 hours <br />3.80291e-4 weeks <br />8.7515e-5 months <br />.

The plant was in Operational Mode 5 with the steam generators drained and Reactor Coolant System (RCS) level at mid-span in the loops. RCS temperature i was 101F and the "B" Residual Hect Removal (RHR) Pump was in service.

A complete loss of RHR flow occurred while plant operators were in the  :

process of increasing RHR heat eachanger flow by closing down on the bypass  !

valve. At 0200 hours0.00231 days <br />0.0556 hours <br />3.306878e-4 weeks <br />7.61e-5 months <br />, when beginning this evolution, pump flow dropped to zero as the pump became airbound. At this point, the 11. RHR Pump was shut down and the 1A RHR Pump started. [RH-P-1A] started with no indicated flow and low pump amps, so it was shut down also.

Both pumps were then vented and they were restarted with no effect. RCS  !

loop level was then inpreased to approximately 92r leval in the loops. At j 0108 hours0.00125 days <br />0.03 hours <br />1.785714e-4 weeks <br />4.1094e-5 months <br />, the 1B RHR Pump was started and operated satisfactorily with tha  ;

operator continuously venting. At 0130 hours0.0015 days <br />0.0361 hours <br />2.149471e-4 weeks <br />4.9465e-5 months <br />, a nominal 1900 gpm RHR flow was restored with the pumps vented. ,
