LER 80-30/OlT Mr. B. H. Grier, Director of Regulation United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission Region 1 631 Park Avenue King of Prussia, Pennsylvania 19406

Dear Mr. Grier:

In accordance with Appendix Specifications 3.7.14.1 and 6.9.2, Fire Suppression Water System, the following occurrence is reported. This ~

occurrence was reported to Mr. J. D. Hegner, the Beaver Valley Unit 1 NRC Resident Inspector, at 1420 hours0.0164 days
0.394 hours
0.00235 weeks
5.4031e-4 months
on May 19, 1980.

Plant operators sere testing the diesel-driven fire pump on Monday, May 19, 1980 when they received a high temperature alarm. During that morning, the fire pump was started three times due to fire system testing; each time.

the pump was subsequently shutdown. The first time the pump was run was for the weekly diesel-driven fire pump surve11'ance test from 0816 until 0846 hours0.00979 days
0.235 hours
0.0014 weeks
3.21903e-4 months
. The second pump run was a result of a low system pressure auto-start while doing the fire system alarm test, which was from 0858 until 1044 hours0.0121 days
0.29 hours
0.00173 weeks
3.97242e-4 months
. The third start was the result of low system pressure, again due to testing. The pump was running the third time from 1116 until 1208 hours0.014 days
0.336 hours
0.002 weeks
4.59644e-4 months
when it was idled down and then shutdown due to a high temperature alarm. An investigation is underway at this time.

The plant motor-driven fire pump is presently out of service; however, a temporary fire pump is hooked up for service and it is felt that degradation to the system is minimized because of this backup pump.

Very truly yours, -

f y 1-J. A. Werling
