In accordance with Appendix A, Beaver Valley Technical Specifications, the following occurrence is reported. This occurrence was discussed with the Beaver Valley NRC Resident Inspector, Mr. D. A. Beckman, at 1300 hours0.015 days <br />0.361 hours <br />0.00215 weeks <br />4.9465e-4 months <br /> on April 7, 1980. ,

The plant was in Operational Mode 5 with the steam generators drained and l l

Reactor Coolant System (RCS) level at mid-span in the loops. RCS temperature was 81F and the "B" Residual Heat Removal (RHR) Pump was in service. )

l A complete loss of RHR flow occurred when plant operators were attempting l to increase RHR flow from 1000 gpm to 3000 gpm so the RCS could be recirculated '

through Mixed Bed Demineralizer [CH-I-1A]. The resin in [CH-I-1A] had been replaced and had not been used so a dilution of approximately 50 ppm was expected.

BVPS Technical Specifications require 3000 gpm core flow when diluting. At 1234 hours0.0143 days <br />0.343 hours <br />0.00204 weeks <br />4.69537e-4 months <br />, with RHR flow at approxiustely 2500 gpm, the RHR Pump [RH-P-1A] ammeter started to oscillate and then dropped to zero. The operator then tried to start

[RH-P-1B] but it also was air-bound. Operators were dispatched to containment to vent both RHR pumps. RHR flow was restored at 1309 hours0.0152 days <br />0.364 hours <br />0.00216 weeks <br />4.980745e-4 months <br /> with RCS temperature at 81F. Several subsequent attempts were made to increase flow; but, each time, the pump running current began to oscillate so the operator returned flow to normal.

Maintenance personnel were requested to check flow transmitter calibration [

and the operating procedure was changed to require an operator to vent at all  !

times during this evolution. .

Any additional information and corrective action will be discussed in a followup report.
