PREPARATIONS FOR HURRICANE BONNIE

.At 2:00 p.m. on August 25,1998, Hurricane Bonnie was located approximately 284 miles South Southwest of the Brunswick Nuclear Plant (BNP) with the center estimated near latitude 30.0 North and longitude 75.6 West. The storm is moving North Northwest at 16 mph with hurricane force winds projected to reach BNP at 11:00 p.m. and the eye of the storm making land fall at 8:00 a.m. on August 26.

i Carolina Power and Light Company has implemented their abnormal operating procedures for operation during hurricanes. The licensee declared an Unusual Event for Brunswick Units 1 & 2 at 5:20 a.m. on August 25,1998 due to a Hurricane Warning being issued for the area Shutdown of Unit I commenced at 12:21 p.m. The licensee is monitoring the progress of the hurricane in order to have both units in cold shutdown three hours prior to the arrival of hurricane force winds on site. The licensee intends to activate the Technical Support Center at approximately 1:00 a.m., on August 26. A mandatory evacuation of New Hanover County (Wilmington) is effective at 5:00 p.m.

! The Region II Incident Response Center (IRC) will be activated with two 12 hour1.388889e-4 days <br />0.00333 hours <br />1.984127e-5 weeks <br />4.566e-6 months <br /> shifts starting at 7:00 p.m., August 25.

The Gen:ral Electric Fuel Fabrication Facility in Wilmington, NC, has begtm shutting down plant processes, with the exception of fuel pellets which have already been introduced into the furnaces. The plant is expected to be shutdown ,by 11:00 pm on August 25. The plant staff will be

! dismissed at 11:00 pm; however, a small staff will remain onsite.

The State of North Carolina has been notified.
