The information is as initially received without verifi-cation or evaluation, and is basically all that is known by the Region II staff on this

-date.

FACILITY: South Carolina Electric & Gas Co. Licensee Emergency Classification:

Summer Notification of Unusual Event Docket No. 50-395 Alert Jenkinsville, South Carolina Site Area Emergency General Emergency X Not Applicable

SUBJECT:

OUTAGE EXCEEDING 48 HOURS The licensee has informed Region II that the Unit will be shut down for more than 48 hours5.555556e-4 days
0.0133 hours
7.936508e-5 weeks
1.8264e-5 months
to inspect and repair main condenser tube problems.

The plant had reduced power to 38 percent on June 1 to repair leaking tubes on the "B" condenser. The reactor subsequently tripped from an unrelated switch problem during a surveillance test. Eddy current testing of the "B" low pressure condenser determined that about 30 tubes would not pass the eddy current probe. Further inspection determined that insulation, installed after startup to improve efficiency on the low pressure heaters and associated piping, internal to the condenser, had come loose and damaged the tubes.

Evaluation and eddy current testing is continuing. The plant is expected to remain shut down for at least another two days to complete repairs.

The Mate of South Carolina has been informed.

This PN is being issued for information purposes only.

This information is current as of 10:00 a.m. (EDT) on June 3.
