FACILITY: South Carolina Electric and Gas. Company Virgil C. Summer Nuclear Station Docket ho. 50-395 Fairfield County, South Carolina

SUBJECT:

INTAKE STRUCTURE SETTLEMENT During routine inspection in August 1977, the licensee discovered cracks in the reinforced concrete service water intake tunnel. Followup examination of the pump house structure and the intake tunnel showed h

settlement of 8-1/2 inches.

The net settlement predicted by the designer was 6-7 inches.after credit for 2 inches of rebound when the reservoir is filled. Current indications are that final settlement could be on the order of 18 inches.

The licensee reports that this value would not cause unacceptable structural damage or operational problems. The 36 inch dis-j charge pipe from the pump house to the reactor building, and the 36 inch 4

make up supply pipe from the main cooling water pump house to the service 3

water reservoir pump house have not been installed.

Installation will be j'

deferred.

M The licensee's evaluation is in progress. At present, the licensee does not believe that extensive repairs will be required mn that the core -- -

-e h

loading date will be affected.

Construction of the plant is approxi-mately 50 percent completed.
