UNSCHEDULED SHUTDOWN GREATER THAN 48 HOURS The Sumer plant, which has been shut down since a reactor trip on August 20, remains out of service for replacement of some intermediate and source range nuclear instrument detectors. Restart is expected on August 24.

The reactor trip on August 20 from 100 percent power was caused by a valving procedure error on the part of a technician who was replacing a flow transmitter on a reactor coolant loop. During the trip, one intermediate and one source range channel did not respond as l exp::cted. SCE&G is prepared to respond to media inquiries.

The State of South Carolina has been informed.

SCE8G notified Region II (Atlanta) of this occurrence at 9 a.m. (EDT) today.
