SUBJECT:

REPOR'TER'S CONCERNS REGARDING TRAINING AND QUALIFICATIONS OF SITE EMPLOYEES, HEALTH PHYSICS PRACTICES AND SITE SECURITY The NRC's resident inspector was contacted on March 27 by a reporter for the-Wilmington (NC) Star-News. The reporter stated that be was doing a story on the Brunswick Nuclear Facility. He had applied for a job with a licensee contractor (apparently as a laborer), was hired on March 22, and worked on site on March 23-24.

The reporter discussed several general areas with our resident inspector including general employee training requirements, health physics practices, reporting requirements, exposure limits and dosimetry. Region 13 investigators contacted the reporter and the reporter stated he had no concerns which required investigation by the NRC. The reporter's contact was for the purposes of seeking background information and explanations rather than making allegations.

The reporter stated that an article would be published regarding his experiences.

The licensee does not plan a news release, but additional media interest is expected following publication of the reporter's article.

The States of North Carolina and South Carolina have been informed.

Region Il (Atlanta) received notification of this occurrence by telephone from the resident inspector at 2:45 p.m. on March 27, 1980. This information is current as of 2:30 p.m. on March 28, 1980.
