Subject:

TRANSPORTATION ACCIDENT - VERMONT YANKEE At approximately 9:11 a.m. on October 21, 1986, a train collided with a propane tank truck outside the site, approximately 800 meters from the Vermont Yankee containment.

The collision occurred where a rail line crosses Route 142, southwest of the facility.

The accident resulted in a minor propane leak from the tank truck which was subsequently corrected at approximately~11:00 a.m. by employees from the company who owned the tank truck.

This accident was reported to Vermont Yankee control room at approximately 9:30 a.m.

by plant security guards at gate 2 who heard a report of the accident on a local radio

station. The licensee dispatched the fire brigade commander and other personnel to the accident site to perform a first hand evaluation of the event. The shift supervisor subsequently reviewed the site emergency plan and the emergency notification procedure and determined that no additional action by the licensee was necessary. Additionally, local authorities decided not to evacuate either the elementary school or the post

office which were in the immediate vicinity of the collision site.

No action by NRC Region I is planned in response to this event. The Resident inspector is on site and is following licensee actions. The State of Vermont is aware of the accident. This information is current as of 2:30 p.m., October 21.
