PLANT SHUTDOWN DUE TO TORUS CONCERNS 4

Vermont Yankee is shutting down based on the results of their preliminary engineering evaluations of the torus support systems.

The preliminary i

i data was provided recently to Vermont Yankee by General Electric.

Vermont Yankee has a Mark I containment system and has reported no problems t with the torus support system to date.

The unit will be in a cold shutdown

! condition at 8:00 p.m. January 27, 1976. The duration of the shutdown is unknown.

Prompt media interest is expected because of the plant shutdown and the high level of local interest in plant availability matters. The States of Vermont, New Hampshire and Massachusetts have been informed.

A press release is being issued by the licensee.

Region I, NRC, Philadelphia, PA received notification of this occurrence
