The information is as initially received without verification or evaluation, and is basically all that is known by the Region I staff on this date.

DRUG RELATED DEATH On January 21, 1987, a medical examiner announced that a licensee health physics t:chnician (a health physics temporary supervisor during the current outage) died from a cocaine-induced drug overdose. The body had been found at the individual's residence in Plymouth, Massachusetts on December 24, 1986, and the case had been referred to a medical examiner to determine the cause of death. Local police have told the licensee that the individual was not a previously known drug user or dealer.

Foll1 wing the December 24, 1986 incident, the licensee increased its drug surveillance activities (search dogs and inspections). These activities found no indications of drug substances or use onsite. The licensee revised its fitness for duty policy on January 1, 1987 to require all licensee and contractor personnel to be tested for drug use once a year.

The licensee has received inquiries from the press concerning the death.

The NRC was informed of the death on December 29, 1986 and learned on January 21, 1987 that it was drug related.

The Commonwealth of Massachusetts has been notified.
