RESULTS OF INTERVIEW WITH RUSSELL HAMILTON AS RECORDED BY NRC INVESTIGATOR H. BROOKS GRIFFIN ON NOVEMBER 2. 1983 a

On November 2,1983, Russell HAMILTON, a former ironworker at Comanche Peak Steam Electric Station (CPSES), was telephonically interviewed by NRC Investigater H. Brooks GRIFFIN.

HAMILTON stated he was employed by Brown & Root, Inc., (B&R) j at CPSES on two occasions.

HAMILTON said that he was first employed as a j

pipefitter's helper for 6 months starting May 1980.

HAMILTON stated he left his employment with B&R for about 9 months and returned in 1981 as a third class helpe-i on Bob MESSERLY'S pipe crew.

HAMILTON stated he worked on this crew for 9 months

and left in the summer of 1982.

HAMILTON was asked whether he had ever used a Drillco "rebar eater" drill durinc hi

' employment at CPSES.

HAMILTON stated that he had used Hilti drills to cut throlich concrete, but was not familiar with Drillco rebar eaters, and had not%er cut j

through rebar.

HAMILTON stated that when he hit rebar, he relocated his hole.

HAMILTON stated that normally his job involved grinding and working as a fitter's l

helper on hangers.

HAMILTON stated that he did not know of anybody who had made unauthorized cuts through rebar at CPSES.

HAMILTON was asked if he remembered an instance in which the polar crane was used t relocate part of the main steam line in Unit 1.-

HAMILTON stated he remembered the instance because he was working on a hanger in Unit 1 on the day that the line was relocated.

HAMILTON stated that another crew was relocating the main steam line u; or down, but that he was not involved in the relocation.

remembered that Red EVANS, one of the engineers, was involved in monitoring the

relocation of the main steam line.

4, HAMILTON was asked if he had ever used a torch to cut a hanger or had ever seen 1

anybody cutting a hanger with a torch.

HAMILTON stated that the only time r.e had 7

ever seen anybody cut a hanger with a torch was in the early part of 1982 wnen Bob MESSERLY, the forman of his crew, used a torch to trim hanger number MS1005 en a j

hanger on elevation 885 located near the hole out of containment. HAMILTON stated i

2 that this was a nuclear pipe support hanger which did not fit as it was supp sed tc on the main steam line.

HAMILTON stated that he remembered that Sob MESSERLY used a torch to trim the top and the bottom of the hanger where it connected to the main steam line.

HAMILTON stated he remembered that Silly JONES, another member of the crew, also was involved in the cutting of the hanger.

HAMILTON stated that after MESSERLY nad finished cutting the hanger, he was involved in the grinding of the hanger to smooth the portion that had been cut. HAMILTON said he remembered that the hanger was the proper fit' on the top and bottom after this alteration was mace.

HAMILTON stated that there were no instances during his employment with S&R in whicn he was intimidated or that anyone attempted to intimidate him into conducting his work improperly.

HAMILTON stated that he and his crew members were required to c6nduct their work in accordance with procedures.
