I 1.0 PURPOSE I

1.1 Periodic check of the operation of each compressor in the auto and constant modes of operation.

1.2 Provide monthly periodic maintenance consistent with good operating practices and recommendations of compressor technical manual. '

l.3 Verify proper operation of the air dryer systems.

l

2.0 REFERENCES

IR 96-006, NRC Inspection Report; NRC Commitment for Operations procedures PMT/QC reviews.

3.0 PRECAUTIONS AND LIMITATIONS l 3.1 This procedure is designed to test all modes of operation of each compressor. The operator must have a thorough understanding of the compressor modes of operation and read through the procedure steps prior to performing the compressor switching section.

3.2 It is not necessary to wait until the running compressor unloads to manually start the idle I compressor. There is a time delay that prevents the compressor from loading for seven l seconds. Should the compressor breaker trip when starting, evaluate to determine if the time delay relay is functioning properly.

l 1

3.3 It is good practice to secure a compressor when it is unloaded because of the reduced load on breaker contacts.

l 3.4 During portions of this procedure when checking the AUTO mode control of the 1 compressor, the CONSTANT run compressor is kept running in an unloaded condition by isolating its nuloader sensing mercoid pressure switch. This is done to provide a more reliable brekup should the AUTO mode compressor fail to function properly. Should a problem with header pressure arise, IA-36 for K2A or IA-44 for K2B must be reopened immediately to allow the CONSTANT mode compressor to load and unload properly.

3.5 It is good practice to ensure compressor temperatures stabilize at normal ~ values after each compressor start and cycling of control switch from one operating mode to another.

3.6 The maximum drying temp for Z-39 and Z-31 drying towers is 300 F. If the drying temp  :

on any tower is found >300 F, then the associated air dryer Z-39 or Z-31 should be l removed from service and evaluated for possible damage to the desiccant.
