' PREPARATION CAUTION Circuits within the breaker cubicle will remain energized af ter the breaker has been removed.

8.1.1 Ensure that all the Prerequisites have been completed.

8.1.2 Obtain a safety clearance for the breaker to be tested in ac-cordance with UNT-5-003 8.1 3 Ensure that the spring CHARGED / DISCHARGED indicator on the breaker indicates 8 DISCHARGED = when the breaker is in the lowered position (within the breaker cubicle).

7

Surveillance Procedure ME-3-327 4.16 kV G.E. Magne-Blast Revision 1 Breaker CAUTION In order to prevent the breaker from rolling further than desired when removing the breaker from the cubicle, use a stop bar (angle iron, 2x4, etc.) placed on the floor.

This is necessary to prevent damage to adjacent equipment.

Remove the bar af ter use.

8.1.4 Remove the breaker for the metal-clad breaker cubicle.

8.1.5 Record, the breaker operation counter value.

8.2 INSPECTION AND CLEANING CAUTION Do not work on the breaker or breaker mechanism unless the closing springs are blocked and the opening springs are blocked or tripped open, to avoid accidental closing or tripping.

8.2.2 Remove the are chute assembly.

8.2 3 Inspect the d2rost and sides of the are chute assembly for cleanliness and damage.

8.2 3 1 If cleaning of flat parts in the throat area is necessary, use sandpaper or other nonmetallic abrasive.

8.2 3 2 Use clean, dry air (not to exceed 30 psis) to remove dust and foreign particles.

83 CONTACT ADJUSTMENTS NOTE The following steps should be performed for l

1 each breaker.

I CAUTION Do not work on the breaker or breaker mechanism unless the closing springs are blocked and the opening springs are blocked or tripped open, to avoid accidental closing or tripping.

831 Connect a continuity indicating device (bell set, buzzer, light, etc.) between the stationary and sovable arcing contacts.

832 Arrange the breaker for slow closing.

8 3 2.1 Charge the closing springs by using a S/88-ratchet to turn the driving eccentric.

8 3 2.2 When the indicator reads " CHARGED," insert the spring blocking device.

8323 Manually discharge the closing springs by pushing the manual release button.

833 Slowly close the breaker using the 5/8a-ratchet until the arcing contacts just touch, as indicated by the indicating device.

834 Measure the gap between the stationary and movable primary conta cts (see Attachment 10.2, Figure 1).

835 Record the gap measurement as the "As Found" arcing contact wipe.

836 If the gap measurement is not sa tisf actory ( 5/16" minimum f or 1200 A and 3/8" minimum for 3000 A), the arcing contacts must be 10

Surveillance Procedure ME-3 -3 27 4.16 kV G.E. Magne-Blast Revision 1 Breaker replaced due to their not having any corrective adjustments.

If the gap measurement is satisf actory, record the "As Lef t" reading.

8.3 6.1 If the arcing contacts are replaced, repeat steps 8 3 2 and 3 3 3 for the new contacts.

8.3 6.2 Record the gap seasurement as the "As Lef t" arcing contact wipe and then continue the procedure.

837 Disconnect the continuity indicating device from between the stationary and movable arcing contacts.

838 Ensure that the mechanism is reset so that the prop pin is resting on the prop.

8.3 8.1 Place a Mylar strip or other insulating material between the arcing contacts.

839 Slowly close the breaker until the movable primary contact just touches the stationary primary contact.

8310 While measuring the distance the stationary contact rises (moves upward), fully close the breaker.

8 3 11 Note the distance the stationary contact rose as the breaker was closed.

l 8.3 12 Record this amount of rise on Attachment 10.1 as the "As Found" l

primary contact wipe.

8 3 13 The stationary primary contact should rise from 1/4" to 5/16" for the 1200-A breaker and from 3/16" to 1/4" for the 3000-A branker, l

8 3 13 1 If the primary contact wipe is satisf actory, record the measurement on Attachment 10.1 as the "As Lef t" primary contact wipe; then proceed to step 8.3 21 to continue the procedure.

Surveillance Procedure ME-3-3 27 4.16 kV G.E. Magne-Blast Revision 1 Breaker 8.3 14 If not already done, open the breaker.

8315 Loosen the check nut and turn the adjusting nut as necessary.

83151 Screwing down on the adjusting nut will increase the primary contact wipe; screwing up on the adjusting nut will decrease the primary contact wipe.

8316 Tighten the check nut.

8.3 17 Slowly close the breaker until t,he movable primary contact just touches the stationary pria'ary contact.

8318 while measuring the distance the stationary contact rises (moves i

6pward), fully close the breaker.

8319 Determine if the primary contact wipe is satisf actory (1/4a to 5/16" for 1200 A and 3/16" to 1/a* for 3000 A).

83191 If the primary contact wipe is not satisf actory, repeat steps 8.3 14 through 8 3 19 until no further adjustment is necessary; then continue the procedure.

8320 Record the measurement as the final "As Lef t" primary contact wipe on Attachment 10.1.

8 3 21 Open the breaker by pressing the manual trip lever.

l 8 3 21.1 Remove the Mylar strip from the arcing contacts.

8.3 22 Measure (between the closest points) the gap between the stationary and movable primary contacts.

i 8 3 23 Record the gap measurement on Attachment 10.1 as the "As Found" primary contact gap.

l NOTE When working with the bearings, do not allow your bare hands to come into contact with the bearings.

Skin deposits will promote corrosion of the bearings.

If you should touch the bearings with your bare skin, thoroughly wash the bearings with alcohol to remove the contaminants.

8.5.2.2 Disassemble the cup bearings and contact rings at the hinge points of the contact blades (refer to Figure 23A in G.E.

4 Instruction Manual GEK-7320).

I 8.5 2 3 Inspect the contact rings for wear.

~

A.

If the contact rings are worn to less than 1/32", replace them.

8.5 2.4 Clean the cup bearings and contact rings with kerosene.

Surveillance Procedure ME-3-327 4.16 kV G.E. Magne-Blast Revision 1 Breaker 8.5.2.5 Immerse the bearings and contact rings in SAE-20 o.- SAE-30 machine oil.

8.5 2.6 Remove the bearings and contact rings from the machine oil and allow the excess oil to drain off.

8.5.2 7 Lubricate the bearings and contact rings with General Electric D50H47 lubricant.

NOTE When reassembling the cup bearings, ensure that the cotter pins are properly seated within the castle nuts on the hinge pin.

This ensures l

proper contact pressure at the hinge.

8.5 2.8 Reassemble the cup bearings and contact rings onto the hinge points of the contact blades.

I 8.5 3 Level 3 Lubrication NOTE When working with the bearings, do not allow your bare hands to come into contact with the bearings.

Skin deposits will promote corrosion of the bearings.

If you should touch the bearings with your bare skin, thoroughly wash the bearings with alcohol to remove the contaminants.

8.6 INSULATION TESTS 8.6.1 Meggering NOTE 1 The leads of the megger shall be connected between the breaker case (earth-ground lead) and the primary disconnect bushing (line lead) for the applicable phase when performing a phase-to-ground resistance test.

NOTE 2 When performing phase-to-phase resistance tests, the megger test leads anall be connected between the applicable primary disconnect bushings for the phases being tested.

8.6.1.1 With the breaker in the acLOSED" position, test each phase of

.the breaker to ground and phase-to-phase using the 1000 V scale on the megger.
