SUdJECT: Noncompliance Notification McGuire Nuc1 car Station FILE: MC-704.20

Dear Sir:

This is to notify you of a noncompliance incident at McGuire Nuclear Station.

Information related to the incident is as follows:

Discharge The discharge was the sewage treatment system discharge (discharge 003).

Cause The fecal coliform exceeded weekly average of' 2000/ml.

Date Dates were the week of June 12-18, 1985.

Prevention The current tertiary treatment pond is to be replaced with an appropri-ately sized chlorine contact chamber.

Summary-The tertiary treatment pond (TTP) provides too long a residence fo the sewage treatment effluent. With the hot, sunny weather, algae has ' pro-liferated. The chlorine demand of the TTP has increased until a residual cannot be maintained in the effluent.

Consequently, the fecal coliform weekly average was 2400/ml. The new chlorine contact chamber should al-leviate these problems.

Sincerely, W. A. Ha!ler, Manager f
