Dear Mr. Gleason:

Pursuant to Part II, Section B.3 of the subject permit, this is a follow-up written report for recent bypasses at the McGuire Nuclear Station. The initial notifications were made to your office on March 22, 24, and 25, 1993, by Norma Atherton, Christine Odom, and -

John Carter of Duke Power Company.

On March 22, 1993, it was discovered that a sanitary system manway downstream of the McGuire Office Complex had overflowed.

Approximately 100 gallons of sewage overflowed onto the ground. It did not reach the waters of the Standby Service Nuclear Water Pond.

At first the problem was thought to be a malfunction of a lift station. Later it was determined to be a sewage ejector inside the plant. Maintenance was performed on the sewage ejector to i alleviate the problem. The system was returned to service.

On March 24, 1993, your of fice was contacted concerning the need to temporarily bypass the upflow sand filter of the sanitary system in order to mitigate an impending overflow of the sanitary lagoon.

The sand filter pumps were unable to keep up with the rising water level in the lagoon. The situation was made even more critical due l to an unusually heavy rainfall event in the preceding 24 hours2.777778e-4 days <br />0.00667 hours <br />3.968254e-5 weeks <br />9.132e-6 months <br />. l During the bypass which lasted 1.5 hours5.787037e-5 days <br />0.00139 hours <br />8.267196e-6 weeks <br />1.9025e-6 months <br />, the effluent from the l lagoon still flowed through the chlorinator prior to being discharged to the Waste Water Collection Basin.

l On the following day, March 25, 1993, the pumps were still experiencing problems keeping up with the volume of influent into the lagoon. As a result, permission to bypass the sand filter was requested. The sand filter was subsequently bypassed for a total 9304090202 930401 9 a l {}
