Th s is a follow-up report to the lift station overflow that occurred at our facility on the morning of July 21,1998. Telephone notification was made to Mr. Richard Bridgeman of the Mooresville Regional Office on July 21,1998 by Bob Caccia of Duke Power's Environment, Health and Safety Division. Additional information was e-mailed to Mr. Bridgeman on July 2!,1998. I During the night of July 20, lightning caused a relay failure on conventional waste system lift

. station IW-6, which caused the pumps to shut off. The alarm system was out of service for repair j so the lin station overflowed until noticed by a guard on rounds. Given the rate of flow into the lift i station and time of the storm, we estimate approximately 1500 gallons of wastewater overflowed  !

and discharged into the nuclear service water pond. The nuclear servi c water pond discharges  !

into the waste water collection basin which is the ultimate destination of the conventional waste lin station end is pennitted as outfall #002. The lin station receives discharges from oil water ,

scpratcirs, equipment cooling water and other miscellaneous discharges. However, there was no evidence of oil on any of the ponds.

Upon discovery of the overflow, the pumps were manually cycled until the power could be restored to le lin station. Should you have any comments or need additional information, please contact me at 704-875-5969.

Event

Description:

During the night of July 20, lightning caused a relay failure on conventional waste system lift station IW-6 which caused the pumps : 2 shut off. The alarm system was out of service for repair so the lift l station overflowed until noticed by a guard on rounds. Given the rate of flow into the lift station and time

of the storm, we estimate approximately 1500 gallons of wastewater overflowed and discharged into the l nuclear service water pond, over about five hours. The nuclear service water pond discharges into the waste water collection basin which is the ultimate destination of the conventional waste lift station and is permitted as outfall #002. The lift station receives discharges from oil water separators, equipment cooling water and other miscellaneous discharges. However, there was no evidence of oil on any of the pond.s.

Immediate Corrective Action:

Upon discovery of the overflow, the pumps were manually cycled until the power could be restored to the lift station.

Detailed Investigation / Prevention:

This incident was the result of a lightning strike that caused a relay failure that supports a lift station. An estimated 1,500 gallons was lost to the MNS nuclear service water pond. This pond flows to the waste water collection basin and out NPDES outfall #002.

No adverse environmental consequences were observed as a result of this incident.
