Mr. Rex Gleasan, P.E., Regional Manager Water Quality Section North Carolina Department of Envitcamental, Heelth, and Natural Resources 919 North Main Street Mcoresville, North Carolina 28115 Re: Notification of the Sandfilter By-pass on the McGuire Nuclear Station WT Sanitary System NPDES Permit # 24392 Mecklenburg County, N.C.

Dear Mr. Gleason:

This correspondence is in response to our April 00,1996, telephone call to Mr. Mike Parker describing the situation that required the notification to by-pass the sandfilter associated with the %T Sanitary Treatment System. Because of heavy rains and a clogged pump, one of the two pumps had to be brough oKline to clear the blockage. The heavy isins adding large volumes into the system and with one of the system pumps developing a large restriction, caused the legoon to back up to lle point of overflowing. The decision was made to notify the State of the need to by-pass the sandfilter for several hours to perform -

needed repairs. The system was down for repairs from 12:15 P.M., until around 3:15 P.M., on April 30, 1996. During the repair, a decision was made to replace the pump impeller with a larger one that would provide greater flow rates for the system, and would help eliminate similar problems.
