Dear Mr. Gleason:

On October 23, 1987 you were informed of a chemical release at McGuire Nuclear Station to the Catawba River through the Collection Basin.

This letter is a

follow-up to the telephone notification.

During the weekend of October 16, 1987 McGuire Nuclear

. Station was filling one of the steam generators on Unit 1.

The water contained hydrazine.

During the filling process, the solution began leaking through a check valve.

The steam generator was then drained to a secondary totally enclosed structure within the plant.

This structure drains to a sump that discharges to the conventional wastewater treatment system.

However, the floor drain in this structure was clogged.

On October 18, 1987, shift management made the decision to pump the solution from the structure to the Auxiliary Building roof drain.

For approximately an eight hour period an estimated 10,000 gallons of the solution was pumped to the roof drain that discharges to the Collection Basin (CB) via the yard d rain s.

The CB discharges to the Catawba River.

Additionally, we have an instream administrative limit of 0.06 mg/l for hydrazine that has been approved by the Division of Environmental Management.

The discharge y

The-facts and sequence of events which led to ~ this unauthorized discharge are under investigation.
