Regional Manager, Water Quality Section North Carolina Department of Environmental, Health, and Natural Resources 919 North Main Street Mooresville, North Carolina 28115 Re: Notification ofIW 2 LiA Station Overflow McGuire Nuclear Station, WC Industrial Waste System NPDES Permit ilNC0024392 Mecklenburg County, N.C.

Dent Mr. Gleason-This written nonfication is pursuant to: Part II, Section E (6)(B)(2,3), of the Duke Power Company, McGuire Nuclear Station (WC System), NPDES Permit (NC0024392). Thisis the written follow-up . '

report required to be submitted to the North Camlina Department of Environmental, Health, and Natural Resources for the May 13,1997, IW-2 LIA Station overflow. Telephone nodfication was w.ade to Mike Parker of the Mooresville Regional Omcc ca May 13,1997, at approximately 1500, by Eddie Faulkner of the Duke Power's McGuire Nuclear Site, Environmental Management.

4 A 2" water main feeding a 500 gallon hot water tank in the basement of building 7405, ruptured. The contents rn of the hot water tank and the 2" main, with 90 psi pressurc, flowed into IW-2 Pump Station and "ws4 onto the ground. The IW-2 Pump Station is part of the Industrial Waste (WC) System, that comes from the Island to the Plant (mainly lab sinks). Because this situation occurred aramd lunch, it was felt very little of the water was lab sink waste. It is estimated _1000 gallons of water made it to the grassed area below IW 2 and 200 gallons actually made it to Lake Norman.

. The break in the 2" water line was secured, IW 2 LIA Station was allowed to pump down the extra wa and repairs were made to correct the situation. A root cause investigation will be performed to identify the cause and corrective actions will be i=$~=ted to prewns future events. '
