SUBJECT:

Noncompliance Notification Duke Power Company McGuire Nuclear Station File:

MC-702.26 Pursuant to Part II (A)

(2) of the McGuire Nuclear Station NPDES Permit, Duke Power Company here-by notifies the State of North Carolina, Division of Environmental Management of a situation of noncompliance of it's effluent limitations for the month of October, 1987.

The nature of the noncompliance is the exceedance of the daily maximum DOD limit of 45.0 mg/l at the station's sanitary waste treatment system (Outfall 003).

The daily maximum exceedance occurred on October 7,

1987 and the analysis result was 51.0 mg/1.

The discharge in question is an indirect discharge which enters the Catawba River only after passing through an intermediate wastewater collection basin.

As a result, any impact on the environment resulting from this noncompliance would be mitigated.

The reason for the elevated

BOD, and subsequent noncompliance, was believed to be attributed to cooler weather.

Corrective action has been taken by changing the aeration patterns in the waste treatment system to try to rectify the problem.

Questions regarding this matter can be directed to Mitch Griggs, Nuclear Environmental Compliance, at 704-373-7080.
