Mooresville Regional Office 919 North Main Street Mooresville, NC 20115
Subject:
Duke Power Company - McGuire Nuclear Stat. ion Underground Storage Tanks File No: MC-707.20 ,
Dear Mr. Schiff:
This letter is required t. o be submitted 'o DEHNR wit.hin 2n days of confirming a suspected release of a regulated substance per 40CFR280.62 and 30 days of completion of tank closure.
On 5/21/91, the NPD Gasoline Tank (outside fence) (Tank B) was removed from McGuire Nuclear Station. As reported to you on 5/21/91, when the tank was being excavated it was noticed
- t. hat the soll around Tank B had a gasoline odor.
On 5/22/91, the NPD Gasoline Tank (inside fence) (Tank A) was removed from McGuire Nuclear Station. As reported to Arlen Burney on 5/22/91, when the tank was being excavated it was noticed that the soll around Tank A had a gasoline odor.
At t.er each tank was removed, samples of the undisturbed soil below the bottom of the tank ends were obta.ined. These samples were placed in clean glass containers and transported to a laboratory within a half hour. The sample J oca tions are shown on Attachment 2. Analytical sample results are shown on Attachment 3.
Soil samples from beneath the pump islands and along the piping trenches will be obtained within the next three weeks.
Due to drill crew scheduling, these samples were not able to be obtained prior to this date. When this analytical data I becomes available, it will be forwarded to DEHNR. The area #
I l
where these samples are located has many underground pipes '
and cables in it and is covered by asphalt. Using a drill rig to obtain these samples should minimize the chances of damaging these cables and pipes.
