Title:
Prcbabilistic Response and Response Spectra for Category I Structure Fir, f;o. : A3721 B&R: 20-19-50-53-2 Project l'ar.ager: f!ilesh C. Chokshi (FTS 492-8973) BACKGROUfl0 In many events, we need to evaluate existing nuclear power plant structures to a redefined seismic hazard. For example, SEP plants and some recent OL plants whose design basis was changed from original CP stage fall in this category. Since the structures are already built, we are interested in evaluating the actual safety margins existing in the i design to revised seismic hazard. Probabilistic analysis of structures provide excellent tools for evaluating these safety margins in the cuantitative form. For any analytical scheme of structural probabi-listic calculations, rather than the l4onte Carlo Option, the seismic hazard n'eeds to be defined in the power spectral density (PSD) form. This PSD is then further used in the structural analysis as discussed below. In addition, recent PRAs have emphasized the importance of seismic risk analysis. The computer code developed in this program will be used to make independent analysis, particularly, in the area of structural fragility. OBJECTIVE This program is designed to develop a ccmputer program which can be used to quickly deternine the definition of site specific power spectral densities (g. values and other hazard parameters to be defined by GSB) for further use in the structural analysis. These power spectral densities should be developed accounting for local site conditions in a generic way such as soft, medium and rock sites. This power density function will then be used in ' S I
r-
- m -
the existing probabilistic structural code (RAS), ir.cluding the effect of soil-structure interaction analysis, to generate the response statistics with non-exceedance probabilities (including floor response spectra). The results of these probabilistic analysis will be used as supplementary basis to make licensing decisions. RAS capabilities will also be enhanced to compute structural fragilities useful in PRA applications. - ~ WORK REQUIREMENTS - - Task 1: Determination of Seismic Hazard in the form of Site Specific Power Spectr'al Densities and Other Related Parameters. (Estimated completion date: December 31,.1983). This task will develop methodology for determining site specific power spectral densities accounting for local site conditions in a generic way, such as soft, medium and rock sites. These power spectral densities will be developed on basis. The basis will be the use of g values and other hazard parameter (e.g. responie spectra) defined by the Geosciences Branch of NRC for the particular site. The second approach is necessary since the computerized methodology to be developed at the end of the program can be used to gain so'me insight into the effect of site-specific seismic hazard at the site while more accurate definition of the seismic hazard is being developed. This task
.will be consisting of, at the least, the following subtasks.
Subtask
- b. Develop methodology for generating power spectral densities from other parameters such as response spectra and vice versa,
- c. Prepare a report on the methodology and results developed in thi s-tas k.-- - - - - --
The proposal should identify additional subtasks, if needed, and provide more detailed description to achieve the objective. Task 2:. Integrate Seismic Hazard into the Existing Computer Code RAS to Generate Probabilistic Structural Responses. (Estimated completion date: December 31,1~984) In general, this task will require that the methodology developed in Task I be programmed into RAS, such that, given a , location, geometry and other site-specific parameters one can compute responses and response spectra for a given st.ructure. These responses will be probabilistic and have non-exceedance/ exceedance probabilities attached to them. Also, probabilities of failure in terms of reaching a limit state will also be computed.'

.4-Following are the major subtasks of this task.
Subtask a. Add material properties variation explicitly.
- b. Add simplified soil-structure interaction (SSI) analysis capability.
- c. Add explicit treatment of uncertainties (random and modelling) for use in PRAs.
- d. Include tornado loads.
- e. Modify existing RAS program manuals to include theoretical development, user manual and other pertinent information.
The documentation of the RAS information will be in accordance with the SES Policy and Procedures Manual, Chapter VI.
- f. Implement this program into the NRC/Bt(L system and provide adequate training to NRC staff using this program.
Task 3: Demonstration and Verification of l'ethodology (Estimated Completion Date: December 31,1984) , Carry out a demonstration of the RAS code by performing the
- analysis of a nuclear power plant structure and verify this methodology in an appropriate manner. A report' will
~ , be required at the end of this task showing the application, results and the basis of verification.

This task, in part, is the continuation of the previous contract A3361. The BNL performance in the previous contract was excellent and it will be extremely inefficient and cause schedule delays if this task were to be performed by some other laboratory. The following paragraph further . indicates why the lab was chosen to perform the earlier contract and why it should continue. The BNL has competent staff with extensive experience in probability dnalysis methods. Over the last three years, they have completed several NRR sponsored technical assistance programs in this area. An # example of this can be found in report NUREG-CR-1330, whera BNL was responsible for reviewing methods and criteria for dynamic loads ' combinati'an for nuclear piping systems. In this study BNL developed
- various Montecarlo simulation procedures for finding proper ways for combining dynamic responses. Other tasks carried out for NRR by BNL in recent years involved the review of the state-of-the-art for civil engineering evaluation of Category I structures, development of method.
- of analysis for Category I structures, development of method of analysis for soil-structure interaction, evaluation of theoresponse of contain-ment and Category I structures, and devel'opment of computer code and benchmark problems for piping systems. The lab has the unique positiori in that various universities in New York metropolitan area work with the lab in structural dynamic and probabilistic analysis of structures. For example, Professor Shinozuka and Professor Meier of Columbia, Professor Schuman of Brooklyn Polytechnic, Professor B. Koplin of Manhatten College participate with the lab on a regularly scheduled basis in the
.- related structural work. Considering:the lab expertise and experience it is judged as one of the most appropriate sources for fulfilling this contract.
