  • Rocky Hill Road Plymouth, Massachusetts o2360 E. T. Coulette, PhD BECo Letter #94-067 Senior Vice President-Nuclear May 26, 1994 Commissioner Gail de Planque U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Mail Stop 16 GIS Washington, D.C. 20553 License DPR-35 Docket #50-293

Dear Commissioner de Planque:

You recently asked me about our Cape Cod public relations campaign, in particular to the audience of child bearing age women.

In the past year or so, we've made nearly 30 presentations on Cape Cod. Most groups recaiving presentations were service and professional groups, which primarily reach an audience of working men and women. We've also spoken to retirce groups and students on the Cape.

As part of our cutreach, we have contacted chambers of commerce and other organizations in order to identify potential speakers bureau engagements. It is difficult to identify groups that reach women who are not working or who are not involved in service groups. He have mailed letters and made phone calls to several Business & Professional Women (BPW) groups on the Cape. We will continue to make an effort to meat with these groups, and through our contact with them hopefully extend to other women's groups.

There are other ways that Boston Edison has becorr.a involved in Cape Cod communities. During the past year, e ran a series of advertisements featuring employees including women.

We sponsor a variety of events and projects on the Cape that we feel are of interest to women on the Cape including sponsorship of: Community Care Day at a YMCA camp, Cape Cod Hospital major expansion, Cape Cod Special Olympics, l Dream Day on Cape Cod, Lions Walkathon, golf tournaments, YMCA Carnival on the  !

Cape, Johnny Kelly half-marathon, and environmental seminars at two Cape Cod colleges. .

We feel our efforts on the Cape are very effective. In fact, for the first year in many, there has been no legislation introduced by Cape Cod legislators to expand Pilgrim Station's Emergency Planning Zone (EPZ) to include the Cape, in February, our Government Affairs staff met with two key Cape legislators to j discuss Cape issues. The legislators said that during 1993, not one constituent had contacted either of them regarding Pilgrim Station's emergency plans.

I welcome any suggestions you may have in assisting us in our outreach to women.
