SUPPLEMENTARY INFORMATION 1 Report No.: 50-302/78-012/04I-0

2. Facility: Crystal River Unit #3 -
3. Report Date: 17 April 1978
4. Occurrence Date: 1 January - 31 March 1978 (discovered at plant 4/17/78)
5. Identification of Occurrence:

Environmental samples were not analyzed using procedures which provided LLD's equal to or less than those required by the Environmental Technical Specifications.

6. Conditions Prior to Occurrence:

N/A

7. Description of Occurrence: ,

The following samples had LLD's greater than that required for the dates indicated ~

below:

Seawater Januarv Februarv

(#>ETS) 13 1 Potable neer Quarter 1

(#>ETS) 5 Shoreline Eternal Sediment First Half

(# > ETS) 21 Green Leafv Vegetabl2s First Ealf Ol > ETS) -

15 S. Designation of Apparent Cause :

Inadequate techniques, procedures, and/or equipment to achieve the required LLD's.

9. Analysis of occurrence- )

)

of the 56 nuclides whose LLD's were greater than required, the activity associated with fifty (50) of the nuclides was non detectable and another two (2) nuclides had activities less than the sample LLD. Two (2) more nuclides had detectable I activities which were less than the preoperational 95 percentile values, anc the final !

two (2) nuclides had activities less than een (10) ti=es the preoperational 95 per-centile values. The latter two nuclides were Th-232 (at c 14H for January) and ,

I-131 (at c 09 for January). There were no detectable activities of these nuclides p'" )

( in the other five samples analyzed that =onth, and I-131 has not been detected in any of the six samples for February or March. (I-131 is a critical nuclide for this pathway and c 14G is the critical sample station) .

Corrective Action:

Analysis procedures were revised for the seawater samples prior to the February analyses. As can be seen in Item 7 on previous page, the number of LLD's dropped from 13 in January to two (2) in February. There were no excessive LLD's for the seawater pathway in March and the annual average LLD's to date are equal to or less than those required. No further corrective actions are necessary for the Seawater Pathway.

The nuclides for which the LLD's are greater than those required for the potable water pathway are I-131 (three (3) stations) and Zn-65 (two (2) stations). As can be seen in Table 1, the LLD's from these nuclides have been reduced drastically from lase. year's annual average LLD as a result of corrective actions taken at that time. Further corrective action, including longer count ti=es, will be instituted prior to the second quarter's analyses.

More efficient counting configurations and overnight count times are being i tested to bring the LLD's for Shoreline External Sedi=ent Sauples and Green 2. l Leafy Vegetables in line with those required. This research shculd be completed I in ti=e to apply the results to the next Shoreline External Sedi=ent and Green Leaf 7 Vegetable Samples.
