Reactor Coolant Pump Motors The inspector reviewed the licensee's proposed modification plans for the upper bearings of the reactor coolant pump (RCP) motors. The current plans I

call for the sedification to be done on Unit 2 RCP motors prior to fuel loading and for Unit 1 RCP motors at the first refueling outage.

,

I The inspector reviewed the final safety analysis report (FSAR) and other I

documentation of the RCP motors and determined from the review that the oil

In discussion with the-licensee and review of the RCP motor bearing design the inspector found that each motor bearing contains enbedded temperature detectors, and so indication of failure is indicated and alarmed in the f

control room as a high bearing temperature. This would require pump shutdown.

l Even if these indications were ignored, and the bearing proceeded to failure,

the low melting point of Babbitt metal on the bearing pod surfaces ensures i

that no sudden seizure of the bearing would oc^ cur. The inspector told the

'

licensee that IE would monitor the modification operations of the RCP's durir.g the Startup program. The inspector identified no items of noncom-j pliance or deviations.

The inspector identified no apparent items of noncompliance, however, two

items requiring licensee action were discussed at the exit meeting and l

described in the following paragraph.

'

Preoperational Organization The inspector found that Preoperational Test Section Organization outlined

in Attachment I cf Instruction Letter No. 13 was out of date in that the personnel shown on the organization chart wece no longer with TVA or had been transferred to another job. This was discussed with the licensee and it was stated by the licensee that the organization chart would be updated and the Instruction Letter IL-13 would be revised to allow updating of

'

Attachment I as required.

This item is designated as Inspector Followup Item (328/80-04-01). The inspector additionally found during the review of training records of Preoperational engineers that the last recorded training lecture was conducted in February 1978.

In discussion with the licensee it was found that a new training r.chedule was being developed that would encompass the newly assigned personnel. This item is designated Inspector Followup Item (328/80-04-02).
