Update on Oyster Creek Tritium Issue -4/18/09 14:00 Ron-As you requested, here is a summary of the conversation Jhansi Kandasamy and I had with you earlier this afternoon regarding the latest status on the tritium project.The water sample obtained from the first excavation site East of the CST contained tritium at concentration of 1.56 E6 pCi/L. This is lower than the typical CST concentration

(-8 E6 pCi/L), but approximately an order of magnitude higher than the initial vault sample (-1 E5 pCi/L). There is currently no standing water in the excavation site(s) and no physical leakage has been identified.

Guided wave testing is in progress for the suspect piping, and our Outage Control Center (OCC) remains staffed to support identification of the source of the elevated tritium.We will be taking a daily discharge canal sample and analyzing for tritium to ensure that this remains below detectable levels.This coming week (Monday), we will have our sample collection vendor on site to pull new samples from all of the wells that were previously sampled related to this issue. The sampling is targeted in advance of the suspected rainfall on Monday night. Follow-up samples of these points are also planned for later in the week. We will be also be performing sampling as necessary to support the ongoing excavation.

In addition to sampling of the excavation and the wells in the suspect area, we will be obtaining a few samples from existing wells that are not in the immediate vicinity of the CST area (e.g. near the site perimeter).

We also plan on sampling our groundwater and drinking water samples identified in our REMP program this coming week. These actions are being taken to further bound the area of concern and to validate no offsite impacts.I understand that John White and you may be onsite this Monday.
