Subject:

HANDGUN DETECTED IN POSSESSION OF CONTRACT SECURITY GUARD DURING PLANT ACCESS SEARCH At g proximately 3:15 p.m. on November 12, 1987, a handgun was detected in the duffle bag of a a.ntract Security Guard, who was reporting for work, when the bag was passed through the met.*1 detector at the access control point. The guard stated that it was his personal handCun which he had inadvertently left in the duffle bag from the previous day. The guard was denied access to the plant and was suspended pending further investigation by the licensee and the contractor.

Plant security personnel confirmed through the local police that the guard was licensed to carry the handgun and that it was properly registered.

The plant is currently in a refueling and maintenance outage.

The NRC's Information Assessrrent Team and the State of Connecticut were inforned.

The NRC HQ Operation Center was notified by the licensee at about 3:45 p.m. on 4 cmber 12, 1987. The licensee will submit a 30 day written follow-up report.
