DISCOVERY OF RADI0 ACTIVE CONTAMINATION OUT5IDE THE RADI0 LOGICALLY CON 1 ROLLED AREA On March 13, 1980 radiological surveys of the site grounds discovered three small patches of radioactivo1y contaminated soil outside the radiologically controlled area but within the licensee's property. Radioactivity measurements at contact with the ground indicated about 20,000 to 150,000 disintegrations per minute. The soil, totalling about three tablespoons, has been removed. The licensee is expanding its site surveys to determine if any other areas of contamination exist.  !

The licensee initiated'an investigation on March 10, 1980 after several small areas of soil contamination were discovered on the property during a routinc ' survey. The investigation is continuing in an atternpt to identify the source of the contamination.

No violatiurr.s of NRC regulations have been identified thus far. '

Region I received notification of this occurrence by telephone from the licensec t at 11:05 a.m. on March 14, 1980
