SUBJECT:

HADDAM NECK NUCLEAR POWER PLANT TO BE RETIRED On December 4,1996, the board of directors of the Connecticut Yankee Atomic Power Company voted to retire the Haddam Neck nuclear powered generating station after nearly 29 years of service.

The board of directors consists of the eight joint owners of the plant.

l The plant is being shutdown following an economic analysis of the plant conducted earlier this fall j revealed that customers could potentially save $100 million or more by the early closing of the plant.  ;

Factors considered in the economic analysis included the low cost of replacement power and the relative small size and age of Haddam Neck. Bruce Kenyon, president and chief ( a:cutive officer of NU Nuclear, said the utility will work to establish an independent, citizens advisory board to help ensure that the public is informed and their concerns are heard and acted upon.

The licensee issued a press release.

The NRC is responding to media inquiries and was present at the licensee press conference.

The state of Connecticut has been informed.  !
