Power Company Notification of Unusual Event Haddam Neck Plant Alert Docket No. 50-213 Site Area Emergency Haddam Neck, Connecticut __ General Emergency X Not Applicable

Subject:

SHUTDOWN GREATER THAN 48 HOURS - UPDATE This updates information on concerns about steam generator (SG) tube cracking in the tubesheet area. Approximately 70 SG tubes have 50*4 or greater through wall indications in the top 1 inch of the rolled area of the tubes. These tubes are to be plugged.

This is based on the licensee's conclusion that such plugging will conservatively maintain the structural integrity of the SGs for the remainder of this fuel cycle.

1 Detailed analyses are planned to determine longer-term actions.

The plant was taken to cold shutdown on July 15. Preparations for tube plugging are ongoing. The licensee now expects the plugging to take from one to two weeks.

The "A" charging pump is now expected to be operational on July 16.

Region I and NRC Licensing are following the licensee's activities.

The State of Connecticut has been inforned.

This information is current as of 10:00 a.m., July 16, 1986.
