NEWS RELEASES / RUMOR CONTROL ,

1.0 PURPOSE 1.1 To serve as a guide in providing accurate and factual information to the Corporate Communications Department for the preparation and issuance of official news releases that concern Catawba Nuclear Station.

h 1.2 This procedure also provides for Rumor Control during station emergencies 1 and drills.

, 2.0 SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES 2.1 The Corporate Communications Department has the responsibility of

(mG) preparing and issuing all of Nuclear Production's official news

' releases after receiving complete accurate information from the j station or the department.

'I R 2.2 The Nuclear Operations Group of the General Office has the responsibility of obtaining from station personnel the necessary l

information on generating unit outages.

2,3 The General Services Group of the General Office has the responsibility for obtaining from station personnel the necessary b

information on accidents which result in serious injury and/or

daage to the station.

. 2.4 Station management has the responsibility of notifying the General 1 Manager Nuclear Stations or designee in the General Office of any new items deemed appropriate for release to the news media.

2.5 All on site personnel have the responsibility to comply with company j -

guidance on rumor control.

5.1.1 The Nuclear Production Duty Engineer in the General Office

shall be notified by the Shift Supervisor, Station Manager or

5.1.2 News Release Approval and Routing

'5.1.2.1 This portion of the " News Release / Rumor Control" directive is for use only when the TSC or CMC.have j not been established.

5.1.2.2 The following is the sequence of steps to get a News Release approved and routed. - -

1. The Nuclear Production Duty engineer (NPDE) is-contacted by the station representative, the NPDE then contacts Corporate Communications.
2. Corporate Communications will develop- a "draf t" -

News Release (NR), using infonnation supplied by the NPDE and/or the Shift Supervisor or Duty r -.- Station Manager (DSM). Any contact between the - -

- shall be verified prior to giving plant - -

information over the telephone, in order to (C'S

-%/ . prevent unauthorized access to plant status.

3.0 LIMITS AND PRECAUTIONS _

i 3.1 Operation of Portable Generators a

3.111_ Avoid operating the unit while hands are wet or while

- standing in water.

3.1. 2_ Generators shall not be started while equipment -is plugged into generator.

3.1.3 Low voltage rubber gloves should be worn while operating

the generators. These gloves are stored with.the v generators.

3.2 Silver zeolite cartridges shall be discarded if the seal has been broken. -
