- INTRODUCTION This report presents analytical data collected as part of the Operational Salt Drift Monitoring Program for the Hope Creek Generating Stution (HCGS) during 1987. 'Ihese data include the following:
I o Atmospheric deposition rates for sodium (Na+), chloride (Cl~), total dissolved solidt, and particulates (Section 2).
o The Na+ and Cl content of tree foliage (Section 3).
I o The Na+ and Cl content of surface soils (Section 4).
All data presented herein were collected using methods described in the preoperational HCGS Salt Drift Monitoring Plan prepared by Woodward-Clyde Consultants (WCC).
I Also included are discussions of some of the trends or relationships displayed by the data. These discussions are based on preliminary review and interpretation I of the data by WCC staff. Because only limited statistical analyses (e.g., annual mean deposition rates at each site) can be performed on the one year operational data set, only preliminary data interpretation is presented in this report. The complete data assessment for the current Salt Drift Monitoring Program will be presented in an Operational Summary Report to be prepared in 1989. This
' assessment will utilize various stati *ical analyses to compare operational data with preoperational data as well as other factors (e.g., meteorological data) which may influence deposition rates in the site area, tw88-211-1 1-1 87C4611-1 I

SECTION 2 s SALT DEPOSITION STUDY ll As part of the preoperational salt deposition study, salt deposition samplers were placed at eight locations in the HCGS site area and a location near the Town of Shirley which is to serve as a control (Figure 2-1 and 2-2). In addition to the l nine sampling locations, replicate samplers were located at Sites 3 and 4, thus the total number of samplers in operation was eleven. After exposure in the field for a one-month period, each sampler was analyzed in the laboratory to determine the amount of particulates, total dissolved solids, sodium (Na+) and chloride (Cl-)
which had been deposited within it during the sampling period. The results were I then expressed as deposition rates in units of mg/m /2 month. Samples were collected at the end of each month, providing a total of twelve sample periods for each sample location.
The monthly deposition rates for particulates, total dissolved solids, Na+, and Cl are presented in Tables 2-1, 2-2, 2-3, and 2-4, respectively. Minimum, maximum and mean deposition rates for each site are provided in Table 2-5.
While no statistical analyses of the3e data were performed, it appears that I
the deposition rates and patterns are generally similar to those found during the preoperational survey. A complete statistica! analysis of the preoperational and post operational data will be completed following the acquisition of 1988 data.
QUALITY ASSURANCE Two sets of colocated samplers were included in the study. The percent difference between colocated samples is used as an indication of the precision of the sampling networks. The method precision based on collaborative testing is 16 %

" Table 2-6 shows the percent differences of colocated samplers 3/3R and 4/4R s for the four parameters. The values for particulates ranged from 3.4% to 106.4%,
with a combined average percision of 35%. The percent difference values for total dissolved solids ranged from 0% to 143.6%, with a combined average precision of 57%. Na+ percent difference values ranged from 3.7% to 87.7%, with ,
a combined average precision of 21%. Percent difference for Cl ranged from 0%
to 148.6% with a combined average precision of 31%.
I These resuits indicate a high degree of variability associated with the data.
The relatively high standard deviations noted in Table 2-5 also suggest variability I of the data. Several environmental factors may account in part for this variability. The volume of water in the sampler and thus the amount of rainfall i may influence the amount of deposition. In addition, many of the samples contained contaminants such as algal growth, insects, and bird excrement-all of which are suspected to have potentially af fected some of the results.

SECTION 3 NATIVE VEGETATION STUDY I
Collections of foliage from several tree species were made at two locations I in the site area as well as a location near the Town of Shirley which is to serve as a control (Figures 3-1 and 3-2). These are the same locations and trees from which foliage collections were made for the preoperational salt drift study.
Foliage samples were collected monthly from May-September 1987 at each of these locations. The species samples were as follows:
Location 1 (Mad Horse Creek)
Loblolly Pine Pin Oak Black Cherry Sassafras I Blackgum Sweetgum Flowering Dogwood Location 2 ($11ver Lake Meadow)
Black Cherry Pin Oak Blackgum Sassafras Flowering Dogwood Sweetgum Location 3 (Shirley Control)
I Black Cherry Pin Oak Blackgum Sweetgum Foliage from three trees of each species were sampled at each location to provide a measure of species variability. Each sample wes then analyzed in the laboratory to determine the concentration of sodium (Na+) and chloride (Cl-)
present. These data are presented in Tables 3-1 through 3-14. Mean values for species sampled are presented in Tables 3-15 (Na+) and 3-16 (C1'). A discussion of trends evident from these data is provided in the following sections.

SPECIES RELATIONSHIPS I Na+
The preoperational survey found no significant seasonal or spatial variations in foliar Na+ content in the vicinity of HCGS. While no statistical comparisons have been made utilizing the 1987 operational data, it is apparent from the data presented in Table 3-15 that the 1987 data reflect a similar pattern.
I Cx The preoperational survey found 1) that a significant relationship exists between leaf age and higher chloride content for most of the species sampled, and I 2) that flowering dogwood contains significantly higher amounts of chloride then the other species sampled. Although no comparative statistical analyses were made using the 1987 data, the data presented in Table 3-16 appear to follow this general trend.
I SPATIAL RELATIONSHIPS I As was found during the preoperational study, no spatial relationships are evident from the data presented in Tables 3-15 and 3-16. These data along with i data acquired during 1988 will be fu-ther evaluated as part of the Operational Summary Report to be prepared in 1989.

SECTION 4 J SURFACE SOIL STUDY Collections of surface soils were made at two locations in the site area as well as a location near the Town of Shirley which is to serve as a control. These locations correspond to those at which foliage was collected (see Figure 3-1 and 3-2). At the Mad Horse Creek sampling location, soils were collected from three separate sites - one corresponding to the woodland where hardwood foliage samples were collected (Site IA); the other two to the woodland where pine I foliage samples were collected (IB and IB-A).
As for the Native Vegetation Study, soil samples were collected monthly from May-September at each of these locations. The results of soils analyses ir,1987 are presented in Table 4-1. These data consist of sodium (Na+) and chloride (Cl-)
concentrations in soils collected at Mad Horse Creek (Site Nos. I A-1, I A-2, I A-3, IB-1, IB-2, IB-3, IB-1 A, IB-2A, and IB-3A) Silver Lake Meadow (Sample Nos.
2-1, 2-2, and 2-3) and the Shirley Control (Samp'e Nos. 3-1, 3-2, and 3-3).
Tables 4-2 and 4-3 present means for each of the sampling locations (I A, IB, 2, and 3).
The only trend which is evident from the 1987 data is the higher concentrations of both Na+ and Cl which occur in nils collected at Site IB at Mad Horse Creek. This site is immediately adjacent to tidal wetlands which extend from Delaware Bay to the dike system for Silver Lake Meadow. The ele.ated Na+ and Cl co.,centrations may reflect periodic inundation by saline waters during storm surges or higher atmospheric deposition rates due to the exposed nature of the site. However, measurements of the soil water salinity at this location were below the detection limit of a Solltest 5500/5100-A Salinity Bridge / Soil Salinity Sensor.
