Gentlemen:

l SUBJECT: CATAWBA NUCLEAR STATION INITIAL EXAMINATION REPORT NO. 50-413/92-302

T_his refers to the Nuc. ear Regulatory Conimission administered axaminations led

. by. Ronald F. Aiello during the week of October 19 -1992. These examinations

~

were -administered to employees of. your company who had applied for-licenses to

operate your Catawba Nuclear Station. At the conclusion of the examination,

.the examination questions and preliminary findings were discussed with those

members of your-staff identified in the examination report, Enclosure 1.

The high-failure rate on this written examination isian indication of-a:

-decrease in the effectiveness:of the; initial training program. In conjunction-

with the corrective actions:in response to the poor performance during.the

last requalification examination, we believe that specific initiatives need to

'he taken to address this weak area.

- A Simulator Fidelity Report is included in this report as Enclosure 2. A copy-

of-the facility Comments regarding the written-examination is included in this

report as _ Enclosure 3. The NRC Resolut4on'of the Facility _ Comments is

included as Enclosure 4. A-copy of the 'fritten examination questions and

answer key, as noted in Enclosure 5, was provided to members of the facility's

training staff. at the conclusion of the exam.

,

= The Generic Fundamental Examination-Section (GFEE) results. for the -last

Catawba examination were that eight of eight-(100 percent) candidates-passed-

'

in February 1992.

In actord -e with 10 CFR- 2.790 of the Commission's- regulations, a copy of

-

this letts and,the enclosures will be r' aced in the NRC Public Document Room.

' Should . >: aave.any questions concerning this exam' nation, please. contact us.

,

Sincerely,

[ (Original signed by A. F. Gibson)
