Subject:

McGuire Nuclear Station NPDES Permit NC0024392 Notice of Violation - Correction File: MC 702.13

Dear Ms. Smith:

Recently, we received a letter from you dated May 24, 1993, concerning effluent violations at McGuire Nuclear Station for September,1992. I would like to bring to your attention a typo in this letter.

This letter cited us with a violation of the chlorine effluent limitations on Outfall 001.

This was based upon the reported chlorine value of 1.8 mg/l exceeding the permitted limit of 0.200 FIN mg/1.

On the Discharge Monitoring Report (DMR) McGuire submitted for September,1992, ~

this chlorine value of 1.8 mg/l was reported for Outfall 003, not Outfall 001. Since there are no chlorine limits in the NPDES permit for Outfall 003, then no violation has occarred on the chlorine monitoring requirement.

Also, I would like to point out that Outfall 001 is once through cooling water.

Chlorine values are required to be reported for Outfall 001 only when chlorine has been added. Chlorine was not not a part of the waste stream for Outfall 001 in September,1992.

If you should need additional information or have questions, please contact Norma Atherton at (704) 875-5963.

Sincerely ,
